How to Use

It’s more than color. It’s a work of art.

Because different parts of your hair take in color differently, Vidal Sassoon created Salonist, a revolutionary 2-step method that treats your roots and lengths separately. The result is stunning, seamlessly blended color with lots of depth and tones.

PREP

To begin, empty Tube 1 and Bottle 1 into the bowl and mix until smooth.

PRO TIP: For long, thick hair use two boxes of Salonist 4/46 Dark Red Violet hair color.

Then, using the tip of the brush to part your hair, divide it into ½-inch sections along the hairline.

STEP 1: BRUSH ROOTS

Take ¾ of your mixture and brush the rich 4/46 Dark Red Violet color cream into your hairline. Massage your roots to ensure even coverage.

Because 4/46 Dark Red Violet is a vibrant shade, proceed immediately to Step 2.

Prep for Step 2 by adding the Sassoon Serum in Tube 2 to the color cream still in the bowl. There should be about ¼ left.

PRO TIP: If you did not use ¾ of the product in Step 1, remove the excess product before adding serum.

STEP 2: BLEND THROUGH LENGTHS

Scoop the new mixture out of the bowl and smooth and blend thoroughly through your hair, all the way to the ends. Massage the color all over, even at the roots for the best coverage.

Because 4/46 Dark Red Violet is a vibrant shade, wait 30 minutes.

FINISH

Wash hair with a color-safe shampoo, rinse and then apply Salonist Color Preserving Conditioner. Leave in for two minutes, then rinse again.

PRO TIP: Use Color Preserving Conditioner for every day washes to make color last longer.

Vidal Sassoon Salonist Dark Red Violet REVOLUTION

This was my first campaign and frankly, I was nervous. I've had my hair colored many different colors over the years both at salons and via boxed colors with varying degrees of success. For the past year, I've wanted red hair. I can pull off a lot of shades of red (anything between ginger and dark auburn), and in the past year I've gone to three different mid to upscale salons in my local area. I spent almost $200 on ONE of those trips alone to no avail. One stylist - after coloring my hair for the better part of 3 hours - frankly said that my hair came out chocolate brown because she "was too scared to make it red." Thanks. After switching to boxed colors to try it myself, I ended up with bright red clown roots that glowed in the afternoon sun and tips that were almost black. Thanks again. I took a chance on this campaign and remained hopeful because of the two-part coloring system in the Salonist box. Would this really give me a good overall color even though the roots and ends and in-between are all differing shades? I worked up my nerve and began. The box contained gloves (a tad small), a tray for mixing, a brush with a pointed end, the coloring liquids (one bottle, two tubes), instructions, and a tube of conditioner. NOTE: I read many reviews here before I began and I noticed that a lot of people said their instructions specified both a 20-minute and a 10-minute waiting period. My instructions specified ONE 30-minute waiting period. I therefore checked on the VS website which also said there were two waiting periods; however, I followed MY instructions from my box and applied as instructed - roots, the rest of the hair, then one half-hour wait. I found the instructions to be very clear and easy to follow. I put on the gloves and emptied the bottle and colorant tube into the tray. I mixed them completely with the brush, which took a few minutes. The instructions said to use 3/4 of the mixture on the roots and save the remaining 1/4 for the rest of my hair. The tray itself was clearly marked, so after the mixture was blended and thickened a bit, I simply separated the color along the line and used the larger area. The fact that the mixture was the texture of a slightly runny pudding made this easy. This mixture was VERY light in color and looked like it was meant for a blonde. The instructions specified that this was normal, so I continued. (The mixture ended up turning pink, but don't let either concern you) I began to apply the color as directed - part your hair, brush the color on from scalp up 1/2 inch to coat the roots. Continue this in sections on each side of your hair, and do the same in the back. The pointed end of the brush made this pretty easy. I will say that after having read other reviews stating how hard this was to do in the back, I had my husband do the back of my roots (although in retrospect, I could have managed it myself). Immediately after you are finished coloring the roots, my instructions said to add the serum to the mixing tray and blend it with the remaining 1/4 of haircolor. This blended together quickly and easily. The instructions then said to grab a glob of it with your hand (!!), plop it on your head, and work it down the hair to the ends. I was not looking forward to this part, but the mixture did not drip a single drop anywhere. I had plenty of coloring left. My hair is shoulder length, but I think one box would be enough for most unless your hair is extremely thick or very long. Once my hair was completely coated, it was time for the 30-minute wait. Having read reviews, I was concerned about the few grays I have around my face and briefly considered waiting a little longer. I changed my mind though at the 30-minute mark and opted to follow the directions completely. I will admit that my head at this point was a bright, clown red, but having colored my hair many times before, I wasn't too concerned. I rinsed the color out, opting for the stainless steel kitchen sink instead of my white bathroom. This was definitely a good idea because the few splashes I made onto my white painted windowsill took a Magic Eraser to get off. After rising, I shampooed with a color-protecting shampoo and used the included conditioner. My hair is extremely shiny and soft! It's a fantastic color! I am a complete believer in the Salonist system because my roots and tips are well blended and BELIEVABLE. I'm not a scalp clown with black tips. I am pale and have freckles, and yet this color still looks wonderful with my skin tone. My hair is dark inside, with a cool auburn hint, but outside it's definitely a dark red violet. It's not as drastic as it may sound though - I'm not 40 trying to look like 20. It's a great shade that looks just interesting enough not to be boring. I will definitely use the Vidal Sassoon Salonist coloring system again, and look forward to using both this and other Salonist colors in the future.

My Fear Was Totally Unfounded!

I was pretty excited when I was asked to participate in the Vidal Sassoon hair color campaign. However, I did have some reservations about applying this color to my hair. I have to admit that I have not been keeping up with my hair color and hoped that this campaign would reinvigorate my passion for hair coloring again. When I received my box I opened it and tested it to see if I had any kind of allergic reactions and read the instructions thoroughly to make sure I followed them accurately; I had a few experiences where I left the dye in a little too long and ended up with some pretty dry, damaged hair, but that's between us girls! The following day I had my daughter help me. I went over the instructions with her and instructed her how to apply everything. She is pretty experienced with the application of hair color and took the helm. While she was applying the product to my hair I did not notice the strong, pungent odor that would eventually force me outside into more open air, so this is a plus. When my timer sounded I had my hair rinsed and the conditioner applied, the smell is great! I dried my hair and had to run and throw the towel in the washer as I forgot about grabbing an old, shabby towel (They were immediately washed and came out unscathed). I made the decision to wait about a week after having my hair treated to finally enter a review because I did not want to jump the gun and give a raving review and a week later I will be getting a color fix. I really have to admit that I am very happy that my hair is almost exactly the way it was before I colored it. I do think that anyone who makes the instruction manuals for hair coloring should mention that we should use an old, decrepit towel because it will color. I can honestly say that I have found the hair coloring that I will always use from now on. I do suggest this for anyone like me with brittle, sensitive hair.

Easy to use - great results

When I first opened the box, I have to admit I was a little intimidated with the brush and bowl concept. I've been dying my hair at home for about 2 years now and only when I've gone to the salon I'd seen this and thought it would be too difficult - honestly I was really surprised, it wasn't hard at all and went on nice and easy and the color was great - the roots are always the part that you try to cover the most and this had direct coverage on those areas. I naturally have dark brown (almost black hair) and went with 4/46 Dark Red Violet - my hair had been colored before but my roots were bad and needed a refresher. My hair came out shiny and smooth after.
